Make Time for Exercise This Winter

Working out can be hard enough when you have a hectic schedule, but try adding winter weather in the mix. Yikes! Cold wind, ice, darker days...it sounds almost impossible, but it's not true. You can exercise this winter! The key is to do it the right way.

Follow these tips to make your winter workouts a reality:

Invest in the Proper Gear
If you are willing to exercise outside, you must have the right gear! Select shoes with good grip so you won't be slipping and sliding. Layer your clothing and avoid wearing cotton. Synthetic material is a much better option since cotton stays wet and clings to your body which will just make you feel colder. It may take some time to find the right outfit, but what you choose to wear can make all the difference in your willingness to venture outdoors.

Enlist a Workout Partner
Find someone who is willing to exercise with you. It can be a friend, your spouse, or even your children. When you have someone who will hold you accountable, you are more likely to go. Plus you will enjoy their good company.

Stay Inside
If you are just not brave enough to exercise outside, there are still plenty of indoor workout options. Joining a gym is a great option. Gyms include a variety of equipment, group classes, and many include daycare for your children. It can be an outing for the whole family! If you prefer to exercise at home, you can invest in a variety of DVD's. There is a DVD out there for every type of exercise from cardio, weight lifting, Pilates, etc. Whatever you decide to do make it fun, otherwise you’ll be dragging.

Focus on the Benefits
Working out this winter has so many benefits. People who exercise in winter are usually healthier and avoid catching as many colds. Exercise is also good for your mental and emotional health. Who doesn't want less stress?

Be Balanced
A schedule is always important to keep you on track, but it's important to remember that things come up and sometimes you just can't do everything you want. Do your best, but don't beat yourself up if you slip out of your schedule every now and then.
