How to Prepare for Overnight Guests – Stress-Free Tips

As if the holidays aren’t busy enough… you may be expecting an overnight visit from family or friends. For many, having company is fun and exciting, but for others it can be extremely stressful. Being a hostess may not come naturally leaving you feeling panicked and stressed. You may get so overwhelmed about making everything appear "perfect" that you don't even get to enjoy the company of your guests. If you find yourself relating to those feelings, realize that you are not alone!

Follow these simple tips to help you transition from a stressed-out hostess to a care-free hostess:

Change your mindset. So many times we are worried about the minor details and forget the big picture – your family and friends are coming to visit YOU. They are coming to enjoy your companionship not to walk around with a white glove inspecting every lampshade. If you are consumed with keeping everything perfect, you’ll miss out of the real joy of being with the people you love.

Get organized before your guests arrive. Instead of rushing around at the last minute, get organized in advance. Make a general list of what you want to accomplish before your guests arrive and schedule time (or get help) to complete those tasks.

Get your guests involved. It can be frustrating as a guest to watch your host run around trying to take care of everything and not accept your offer to help. If someone offers to help you, graciously accept. Plus with more hands, the job will get done quicker leaving more time for fun!

Be yourself. Recognize that your family and friends do not need 24/7 entertainment. You still have a life and your guests need to understand that. Yes, they want to spend time with you, but you also have responsibilities. If possible, allow for some wiggle room and spontaneity in your schedule. See if you can you include them in some of daily routine like exercise or family activities.

Make your guest feel at home. Give your guests a tour of the home. Show them where things (glasses, towels, soap) are located or how to use certain appliances (TV, coffee pot). Allow them to make it their home while they are there and do not micro-manage.

Quality time with family and friends is priceless. You will create memories that will last you a lifetime. Forget the minor details and enjoy the moments! Can Simplify help you prepare for your upcoming company? If you live in the Silicon Valley, please contact us for more information.
