Overcome Distractions When Working at Home

In my last post I shared ways to deal with distractions when you’re working. The distractions can quickly multiply when you work from home. I wish I could say that working at home is a piece of cake, but unfortunately that isn't always the case. But with that said, you can make working at home a success.

The key to success is to identify the distractions and then find ways to overcome them. Here are a few examples of distractions you may encounter along with some helpful suggestions:

Your Children

As much as you love and adore your children, they can also be a big time distraction. One suggestion is to work while your children are at asleep or at school. Work around their schedule.  Set boundaries with older children. For example, if the door to your office is closed, then you are not to be disturbed. You could even hang  a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door handle. You could also consider hiring a babysitter for a few hours a day.

Phone Calls & Emails

Chatting with friends and family on the phone or online can take away precious work time. When working, try to discern if the phone call/email is work-related or not. If it is not related to work, respond later. Give your family and friends a key word or number that they can use if the situation is an emergency. Another suggestion is to turn off your cell phone (if it is not your work number) and limit the number of times you check your email per day.

Household Work

Staring at dirty dishes and loads of laundry can be extremely distracting. One of my favorite suggestions is to hire a household assistant. Instead of stressing about all the household work, you can have a reliable person taking care of those little things that take up so much of your time and energy.
