5 Simple Ways to Stay Healthy & Manage Stress

For many women, it can be so stressful to balance work and your activities with caring for your family needs and household chores.

Stress can lead to many health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and a suppressed immune system. Women just can’t afford to get sick.  We need to do everything we can to protect our health.

How can we do this?

Schedule exercise. It doesn’t take a big investment in time to gain big results.  Its recommended that you shoot for 30 minutes of exercise a day. You can go for a walk or a yoga class during your lunch break, use the stairs rather than elevators or visit a gym before work. Why not schedule a date with your partner to go for a walk each evening so you can have alone time to talk? Also, remembering to breathe deeply can help immensely!

Eat healthy.  When were tired, the temptation is to just grab something quick, which is usually not too nutritious.  Instead, plan ahead and have healthy snacks available. Perhaps a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts, or have small baggies of cut up vegetables – like carrots, celery, pod peas ready in the refrigerator.  Plan with your partner a weekly menu so the shopping and preparation is easier to handle.

Be more conscientious about hygiene.  With the threat of the H1N1 virus, it pays to exercise caution, without being fanatical.  One of the best defenses is to wash our hands after contact, whether shaking hands or pushing a shopping cart.  And that means doing it properly with warm water, lots of soap, and rubbing them for the length of the ABC song.

Have some creative outlet to de-stress. Schedule some time to do something that will cause you to feel refreshed and ready to tackle the challenges again. Perhaps pursue a hobby you've put aside or take up a new one you've been wanting to try.  You might want to check a blog I wrote earlier on Me Time” for some suggestions on how to overcome any guilt you might feel.

Delegate when overwhelmed.  It’s okay to ask for help.  Simplify would be happy to help you set up a service for that one job that’s constantly on your mind but you can’t seem to get done. In managing you stress, don’t think that you are taking time away from your family, realize that you are giving them the gift of a happier and healthier you.
