How to Make Your Silicon Valley Home an Oasis of Relaxation

The last thing you want to do after a busy day is to come home and have more stress heaped upon your plate because something’s terribly wrong at home!  Of course, we can’t escape every obstacle to relaxation, but we can create an overall feeling of calm in our homes so we can better cope when the occasional disaster happens.

Stay ahead of the messes and repairs.  It’s when you’re always playing catch up that any new thing becomes really stressful.  If the little things are kept up, then when something major happens, you’re better able to handle it.

Simplify your surroundings by removing the clutter.  If you don't adore or use something regularly, think about tossing or donating it. You'll be amazed at how much freer you'll feel, and if you donate it you’ll feel good about helping others.

Coordinate colors.  We are greatly impacted by color. Some people thrive on vibrant colors.  Others need a neutral color scheme. So choose something soothing and then coordinate colors within a room.  Too many colors and unconsciously your eyes are constantly darting from one to another.  Light colors are more relaxing than dark.

Assess your rooms. Are they welcoming and comfortable?  Or are they cold and rigid? Can you move freely in them or are you afraid of knocking into something?  Is the furniture inviting? Adding some cushy pillows may be all you need.

Consider adding plants.  Plants help keep the air quality of your home fresh, as well as beautifully bringing the outdoors in.  Elements from nature create a more relaxed environment.  Fragrances from natural sources relax, whereas there are reports that chemical scented air fresheners pose a health risk for some.

Manipulate the lighting to create a whole new mood.  Is the sun too bright?  Add window sheers.  Do you need better lighting to see your projects? Think about painting your walls white to reflex more light and add floor lamps, table lamps, or spotlights. Lighting really enhances the atmosphere of a home.

Have your own quiet spot.  Everyone needs a place they can relax and regroup.  For some it may be simply their favorite chair.

Cut down on the noise.  Grassy lawns, hedges, strategically places trees, fences, even double paned windows and heavy drapery can all dampen the noise from outside.  Constant noises from electronic gadgets inside create stress. Have specific turn-off-your-gadget time, and install a small fountain that trickles soothing sounds that mask noise.

Your surroundings will greatly affect your family’s mood.  Do you see areas of your home you’d like to change?  Would you like some suggestions from our experts?  If you live in the Silicon Valley area, call us at Simplify for a free consultation of how to clean, decorate, organize, and maintain your home as a place for you and your family to really relax.
