Spring Cleaning Your Home Office Unleashes New Creativity
Take a good look at your home office. How long has it been since it’s been
thoroughly cleaned and organized? If
you’ve done it recently, good for you!
If you’ve been procrastinating, here are some hints to get started,
because a clean office really will reinvigorate you!
- Dedicate a cleaning day. Pick a day that’s typically slow, so you’re less distracted. You may want to do it on Saturday so you’re not interrupted by business calls.
- Start in one corner of the room and work your way out. As you see clean spaces grow, it will fuel you to keep going.
- As you organize, take stock of supplies and make a list of what’s running low.
- Get rid of clutter. If you don’t need it and it’s broken, throw it away!
- Are papers piles your only filing method? It’s time to create a filing system. Get a cabinet and use hanging folders labeled for each category like insurance, taxes, and so on. If you already have a filing system, now is a good time to sort through documents and shred what’s outdated. (To find out how long to keep important papers, check out The Oprah Magazine.)
- Eliminate unwanted clutter by not printing everything. Rather, store things in electronic files on your computer for clutter free access. If you need to print something, find a place to store it immediately.
- Only keep items you use often on top of your desk. Store everything else in drawers or on shelves.
- Physically clean your computer, wiping down surfaces with an approved cleaning solution and use compressed air to blow out the dust that’s collected in the fan. Rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip cleans the keyboard nicely.
- Use the brush attachment on a vacuum to clean shelving, books, knick-knacks, drapery, and everywhere dust collects. Move everything possible to get rid of all the dust bunnies.
- Wipe shelving and electronics with a damp cloth. Revitalize wood furniture with polish.
- Finally, clean your computer. Make sure everything is saved to a file backup system. Delete unused files and programs, and defragment your hard drive. Then make sure all of your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is updated. Don’t forget to clean your bookmark bar and email folders, too.
Imagine how great it will feel to sit down to
work in a clean, organized space! You can focus on your work, instead of
