Clean Green with Natural, Inexpensive Alternatives

Whether you clean your own house or hire someone else to do it, you might want to consider the benefits of natural housekeeping. Ditching “conventional” cleaning products benefits the environment and your family’s health and safety. But, what about the cost? And, can you really achieve a clean, beautiful home naturally?

If you’ve compared prices between natural cleaners and conventional products, you might wonder if you can afford to go green. The truth is you don’t have to invest in costly “green” cleaning products. There are simple, inexpensive home recipes using baking soda, vinegar, salt, and lemon that can replace a surprising number of traditional cleaners.

These homemade products really do work! Your house can still sparkle without the use of harsh commercial cleaning products so there’s no need to sacrifice your standards to clean green. In fact, in many cases the natural solution is more effective.

For example, the following formula is said to prevent red wine stains more effectively than many hazardous carpet treatments: Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let sit for 15 minutes or longer depending on the stain, then vacuum the area. If your carpet is dull, sprinkle table salt on the carpet and let sit for 15 minutes, and then repeat vacuuming.

Another simple all-purpose cleaning formula is to mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar. Vinegar cleans, disinfects and deodorizes – don’t worry about your home smelling like vinegar, the smell disappears when it dries. Additional natural cleaning formulas, solutions and tips are available on the following websites here, here & here.

If you have a professional housekeeper, talk to them about natural products they’ve found effective. And remember that transitioning to green cleaning is a process. You can start familiarizing yourself with natural options, and as you find acceptable replacements you can gradually discontinue conventional products.
