Closet Organization Made Simple

Is tackling your closet something you’ve been meaning to do, but have been putting off?  It’s easy to just shut the door and promise you’ll do it later. Do you need a whole new system for organizing or just need to sort through the items you own, discarding what you don’t use any more? Summer is the perfect time to get organized!

If you need a new system, you’ll have to empty the closet, remove existing rods and shelving, repair holes, and paint.  Next, you’ll need to measure accurately the space you have to work with.  And most importantly, give a lot of thought to how you want to utilize all of your space.  There are so many options available it’s important to have clearly in mind what you want.  One of our favorites is the Elfa System by the Container Store.

If you don’t want a new system, you’ll still need to empty the closet to thoroughly clean and sort everything.  The golden rule of closet organization is:  If you haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it. Now’s the time to add extra shelving, hooks, shoe racks, etc. and don’t forget to use the back of the door.

Here are some closet organizing tips to help you get started:

Discard wire hangers and plastic dry cleaner bags. Both can damage your clothing.

Sort your clothing.  Only put back in the closet those pieces that you love and that make you feel good.  Otherwise, find someone who can alter it for you or just donate it to someone else.  Don’t hold onto items because you’re going to lose weight.  You deserve to treat yourself to something new when you reach your goal.

Think about how you can mix and match everything that you own.  Since you’re examining everything, keep your eyes open for new ways of wearing what you have.

Hang like items together. Hang the suits together on wooden hangers.  Group the separates – jackets together, shirts and blouses together, and skirts and slacks together. You can even sort these by color, or by dress and casual groupings.  Make sure you use the right type of hanger for each item.

Store accessories with the outfit.  You can put the buckle of the belt through the hook of the hanger, or store the scarf in the pocket.

Make sure you fold sweaters on shelving.  Hanging them will stretch them out of shape.  You can use sweater dividers on your shelf to keep them from falling over.  Or store them in labeled sweater boxes.

Pack away seasonal clothing in labeled boxes. This will give your clothes space to remain wrinkle-free.

Check shoes for comfortable fit and wear.  Poor fitting shoes will not only make your feet hurt, but you’ll feel sore and tired all over at the end of the day.  A hanging shoe divider on the back of the closet door or shoe racks on the closet floor are a good way to store shoes.
