Oprah's Challenge: What Can You Live Without?

I was catching up on the Oprah shows in my DVR and the topic of her 3/2/09 show was "What can you live without?" It was a challenge for viewers to get back to basics and focus on what truly matters. The goal was to find more happiness in simplifying their lives.

For instance, one mom went grocery shopping every day but her pantry and basement were stockpiled with multiple items of the same foods. Her kids' playroom was described as a "children's museum." Their challenge for 1 week?

The Challenge
  • limit driving
  • no shopping in stores or on line, except $100 for groceries
  • no dining out or takeout
  • no TV or internet
  • kids pick 5 toys to play with
The Results

Of course, the kids were really upset at the beginning, but even after the 2nd day, the kids didn't even play with the 5 toys they picked! The challenge brought the family closer together because instead of focusing on external things, they reconnected and focused on each other.

Would you be able to do it? Have you done anything like this?
