Tips for Organizing All the School "Stuff”

Going from summer to fall is a big transition, especially when you have kids in school. In my last post I talked about how to clean up and clear out all your summer gear. Now I want to share some ideas on how to manage the abundance of school-related items.

Here are some really great suggestions:

  • Instead of stacking things on the kitchen counter, try hanging a three tier basket for each child. Keep it in the kitchen, family room or bedroom and use it to store things like permission slips, library books (which are always getting lost) and tomorrow’s homework.
  • Create a homework station. Decide on the best spot in your home to set-up your child’s homework station. Take into consideration their age and personality when deciding if it should be a quiet corner or somewhere more accessible. Once you have a spot picked out, stock up on homework tools and supplies and have them nearby in a bin, cabinet or drawer.
  • Keep a binder for important school papers. This binder should contain items you need to refer back to throughout the school year. This will make it easy to find and review things like classroom rules, schedules, class lists and teacher contact information.
  • Get a “keepsake” box per child per year. At the beginning of the school year get a box for each of your children – they can even decorate and label them with their name, grade and the year. Get a box that will slide easily under the bed, and use it to store those extra special art projects, book reports etc that you want to keep.
  • Organize the closet to speed up your morning routine. Do you find yourself stressed each morning trying to help your kids get dressed? Here’s an interesting solution, after you do laundry, try creating outfits for your children for the whole week. Fold together the whole ensemble including socks, underwear, shirts and pants and have them ready in a drawer or shelf.

Take advantage of the transition to the school year to simplify and streamline your home. Hopefully, with a little planning and preparation now, you can approach the new school year with less stress.
